Shamim Nabuuma Kaliisa, the Founder and Executive Director of Chil Artificial Intelligence Lab has been nominated in the inaugural Business Insider Africa Awards in the category of “Social Entrepreneur of the Year”. In the same category includes Toyosi Akere-Ogunsiji; CEO of Rise Networks, Orondaam Otto; Founder & CEO of Slum2School, Misha Teasdale; Co-Founder & Director at Greenpop, and Tunde Onakoya; Founder of Chess in Slums Africa.

The Business Insider Africa Awards are recognizing influential business leaders and entrepreneurs who are driving change, transforming business, and making a significant impact in Sub-Saharan Africa.

“I am so happy that I was nominated. I actually never knew I was but this shows that the world sees our work not only in healthcare but also in other fields like solving hunger and food scarcity,” Nabuuma tells PC Tech Magazine. “I am so proud of it but most importantly proud of the team that works day and night to make sure the world sees Chil’s work.”

Nabuuma, a cancer survivor founded Chil Artificial Intelligence Lab (Chil AI Lab) in 2017 to offer mobile cancer screening to women. The company incorporates the use of artificial intelligence-guided e-oncology services to detect cervical and breast cancer and also uses drone services for easier transportation of cervical cancer specimens from the rural areas to laboratories without women having to travel long distances out of the villages.

In the wake of the Covid-19 Pandemic, Chil AI Lab also developed a mobile application (Keti) and chatbot to allow women in the communities of Uganda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) where they currently hold their operations, to consult oncology experts offering a less invasive and speedier way to diagnose.

The voting phase for the Business Insider Africa Awards is ongoing and ends on April 3rd, 2022 at 11.59 PM WAT (1:59 AM EAT). The nominees in each of the 11 award categories that emerge with the highest votes will be crowned winners at the virtual award ceremony on April 12th, 2022 which will bring together and gather the most talented and inspirational entrepreneurs from Sub-Saharan Africa. The Business Insider Africa Awards are expected to generate vast interest, engagement, and reach on social media across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Notably, Nabuuma’s nomination comes at the time other co-founded company Solerchil Technologies successfully expanded in Kenya —another milestone she is proud of.

“Kenya has been one of our target countries and immediately after the United Arab Emirates (UAE) we opted to come back to East Africa where Kenya was the country. We’re happy that it was a successful expansion,” Nabuuma tells PC Tech Magazine.

Solerchil Technologies makes and rents solar-powered cold rooms to farmers and food market vendors to safely preserve their unsold food for a longer time. The company also helps link buyers to farmers who are ready to buy unsold food at half price. Buyers can order the food produce through Solerchil AI conversational WhatsApp, Facebook, and SMS platforms.

Solerchil Technologies in 2021 emerged among the winners of the Global South COVID-19 Digital Innovation Challenge and received a fund of USD$25,000 (approximately UGX89 million) to implement/improve/scale up their solution.
