STRONG COMPUTE WANTS TO SPEED UP YOUR ML TRAINING

While there are companies that focus on optimizing the models themselves and Strong Compute (A Sydney based Startup) will also do that if its customers request it, Sand noted that this may compromise the results.

Training neural networks takes a lot of time, even with the fastest and costliest accelerators on the market. It’s maybe no surprise then that a number of startups are looking at how to speed up the process at the software level and remove some of the current bottlenecks in the training process.

WILL TRANSFORMER TAKE OVER A.I?

That versatile new hammer is a kind of artificial neural network — a network of nodes that “learn” how to do some task by training on existing data — called a transformer. It was originally designed to handle language, but has recently begun impacting other AI domains.

The transformer first appeared in 2017 in a paper that cryptically declared that “Attention Is All You Need.” In other approaches to AI, the system would first focus on local patches of input data and then build up to the whole. In a language model, for example, nearby words would first get grouped together. The transformer, by contrast, runs processes so that every element in the input data connects, or pays attention, to every other element.

IS DEEP-LEARNING HITTING A WALL?

Few fields have been more filled with hype and bravado than artificial intelligence. It has flitted from fad to fad decade by decade, always promising the moon, and only occasionally delivering. One minute it was expert systems, next it was Bayesian networks, and then Support Vector Machines. In 2011, it was IBM’s Watson, once pitched as a revolution in medicine, more recently sold for parts. 3 Nowadays, and in fact ever since 2012, the flavor of choice has been deep learning, the multibillion-dollar technique that drives so much of contemporary AI.

CAN MACHINE-LEARNING OVERCOME BIASED DATASETS?

A model’s ability to generalize is influenced by both the diversity of the data and the way the model is trained, researchers report.

Artificial intelligence systems may be able to complete tasks quickly, but that doesn’t mean they always do so fairly. If the datasets used to train machine-learning models contain biased data, it is likely the system could exhibit that same bias when it makes decisions in practice.

THE PROBLEM OF AI REGULATION

As AI is rapidly developing, a robust government-led industry self-regulation regime should be put in place. How do you build responsible AI regulation in today’s world? AI-based technologies are evolving at a breakneck pace, with “an above average number of technologies on the Hype Cycle (see Figure 1) reaching mainstream adoption within two to five years,” according to Gartner.

The extremely fast-evolving nature of the AI-innovation landscape strongly disfavours any anticipatory recognition of a finite set of distinct use-cases and the universe of associated risks and benefits associated with their adoption, in a timely and accurate manner. A.I. may be evolving too fast to regulate.

Over the past several years, deep neural networks (DNNs) have been quite successful in driving impressive performance gains in several real-world applications, from image recognition to genomics. However, modern DNNs often have far more trainable model parameters than the number of training examples and the resulting overparameterized networks can easily overfit to noisy or corrupted labels (i.e., examples that are assigned a wrong class label).

WHAT IS TORCHREC?

Pytorch Introduces ‘TorchRec’: A Python-based PyTorch Domain Library For Recommendation Systems (RecSys)

Recommendation Systems (RecSys) are a big part of today’s production-ready AI, although you wouldn’t know it from glancing at Github. In contrast to domains like Vision and NLP, most of RecSys’ continuous discovery and development takes place behind closed doors. The field is far from democratized for academic researchers exploring these approaches or creating individualized user experiences.

RecSys as a field is also defined by learning models over sparse and/or sequential events, which has a lot of overlap with other AI fields. Many of the approaches, particularly those for scalability and distributed execution, are portable. RecSys approaches account for a significant amount of worldwide AI investment; therefore, enclosing them prevents this money from moving into the larger AI field.

TorchRec is a new PyTorch domain library for Recommendation Systems. This library includes standard sparsity and parallelism primitives, allowing researchers to create and implement cutting-edge customization models.

CAN AI LEAD TO A CLEAN ENERGY BREAKTHROUGH

An AI system owned by Google has just “learned” how to control a magnetic field in a fusion reactor – and it could pave the way to generating limitless clean energy. DeepMind’s headline seems grandiose. A fusion reactor works in the opposite way, harvesting the energy released when two smaller atoms join together, releasing tiny, fast-moving particles smaller than atoms. The reactors use a powerful magnetic field to confine plasma at extremely high temperatures – hundreds of millions of degrees Celsius, even hotter than the sun’s core – so that nuclear fusion can occur between hydrogen atoms.
